March 3, 2017 - THDA congratulates and welcomes Dr. Ben Carson to his new role as HUD Secretary. As Tennessee's housing finance agency, THDA administers a number of HUD programs at the state level, and we look forward to working with him and his department on our shared goals. Dr. Carson issued this letter last night shortly after being sworn into office:
Dear Colleagues and Friends
This evening, I took the oath of office to serve the American people as the 17th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. I am delighted by the opportunity to work with all of you to serve those Americans who rely upon HUD and its many programs.
I grew up in inner city Detroit, the son of a single mother with a 3rd-grade education who worked numerous jobs to keep a roof over our heads and put food on our table. While our circumstances may have been challenging, my mother never defined our family in those terms and instilled in me a love of reading and learning.
Many have asked why I want to serve as HUD Secretary, which is a fair question given my many years working as a physician. Working directly with patients and their families taught me that there is a very deep relationship between health and housing. I learned that it’s difficult for a child to realize their dreams if they don't have a proper place to live, and I have seen firsthand how poor housing conditions can rob them of their potential. I appreciate how an agency like HUD can be an instrument to improve those conditions that limit aspiration and opportunity.
Today, some of our citizens are in struggling communities, mired in generational poverty and lacking hope. I will use every fiber of my being to work to improve America’s neighborhoods.
I will, however, need your help and I know that together, we can make a difference in the lives of many Americans. The task before us is great and I want to thank you in advance for all that you do to ensure housing security and strong communities. As I told members of the Senate Banking Committee during my confirmation hearing, I will work hard on behalf of the American people to help realize and seize opportunity and bring the promise of America to all.
Secretary, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
