Dec. 3, 2024 – A grant from Tennessee Housing Development Agency will help Memphis’ United Housing, Inc. move to a new headquarters in the city’s Binghamton Community.
United Housing received a $410,000 grant through THDA’s Capacity Building Program to renovate a recently donated property that will serve as the nonprofit’s new main offices. It was one of five nonprofits statewide to receive a grant.
“These capacity building funds will help nonprofit organizations like United Housing make improvements to their operations that will allow them to more efficiently serve their clients and the communities where they are located,” THDA Executive Director Ralph Perrey said.
The Capacity Building Program is funded through THDA’s Tennessee Housing Trust Fund and is designed to assist nonprofit housing development organizations across Tennessee build their space capacity in order to undertake housing development and other related activities. Funding can be used to help organizations construct, acquire, and/or rehabilitate office or program delivery space as well as increase agency capacity in terms of strategic and/or succession management planning.
“UHI’s relocation to Binghampton signifies our unwavering commitment to meet families and individuals where they are in the community,” United Housing Executive Director Amy Schaftlein said. “Our new building increases proximity to clients while also expanding facilities, deepening our capacity to deliver enhanced services to potential homebuyers and residents.”
The 78-year-old Caritas Village building on Harvard Avenue in the Binghampton neighborhood of Memphis was donated to United Housing in 2022. United Housing plans to complete renovations by Spring of 2025 and will move all 17 of its staff into the new location once work has finished.
